"Knowledge is Power" –Francis Bacon

This morning, I had my first appointment at the Northwestern Ovarian Cancer Early Detection and Prevention Program. Because of my family history, I am not only at high risk for breast cancer but ovarian cancer. I underwent surgery in August to offset my risk of developing breast cancer and enrolled in the Early Detection study to monitor for ovarian cancer. When I first arrived, I met with a coordinator and then a wonderful genetic counselor who was extremely knowledgeable about how much of an effect the genetic testing and high risk experience can have on a young woman. She was so excited and encouraged when I told her about Bright Pink and the unique programs we will be unveiling throughout the year. From the genetic counselor, I went on to have a 3D vaginal ultrasound, physical exam including a pelvic exam and the CA-125 blood test. Though none of these tests are 100% perfect, they are the best that we currently have and the doctor's continued to stress how good it is to get a base-line read on all the tests at my young age. That way, they will be able to get a good clean read of what "normal" is and better detect any changes that may present themselves in years to come. I went into the appointment a little nervous but was overwhelmed with relief when I left to know I am in great hands and am doing all I can to be proactive with my health. I am so grateful that we are living in an era where technology and medical knowledge is in such a more progressive place than when my mother and grandmother were going through battles with both being high risk, and enduring breast and ovarian cancer.
