BRIGHT NOW ARCHIVE
March 30, 2007
Recently, several national magazines have been covering stories highlighting the difficult decision high risk young women are making to face breast cancer head on. Last month, Cosmopolitan magazine covered my personal journey of undergoing genetic testing, coming to terms with what options existed for me, and ultimately opting for a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. This month, O magazine covered the experience of Rene Syler, former CBS Early Show anchor and a personal friend of mine. Both Rene's mother and father had been diagnosed with breast cancer and after several biopsies, and false alarms, Rene also chose to have a double mastectomy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to preempt cancer before it struck. She will be talking about her story on the Oprah Winfrey Show Thursday, March 29. Additionally, in the April issue of Self magazine, the writer does a beautiful job of sharing the story of two high risk cousins. One opted for preventative surgery while the other chooses to undergo a strong surveillance regimen. Both are equally admirable, in my opinion, because both are what is right for each individual. What is most important is that we continue the dialogue with young women who are at high risk and them to take control of their breast health. For more coverage on the issue, check out our PRESS section and to learn more about your own risk level and what options exist for young women who are high risk, visit EDUCATE. As always, feel free to email me directly at Lindsay@BeBrightPink.org.
All the best,
Lindsay
