BRIGHT NOW ARCHIVE
April 13, 2008
When Bright Pink's very own Dr. Deborah Linder was approached by the New York Times for a story following her as she made the difficult and courageous decision to undergo a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy at the age of 33, she was unsure if she wanted to "go public" with such a personal topic. However, when she considered all of the lives that could be saved from telling her story, she immediately signed on. On Sunday, September 16, 2007, millions of people from around the world were introduced to Dr. Lindner as she openly took readers along her intimate journey of learning of her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, and ultimately deciding to take control of the situation by opting for a preventative mastectomy.
On Monday, April 7, Amy Harmon, the New York Times journalist who so eloquently told Dr. Lindner's Story, as well as numerous other stories surrounding the mixed blessings offered by the world of genetic testing, was awarded a 2008 Pulitzer Prize in the category of Explanatory Reporting! Read the article on Dr. Lindner's story here and read more article's in Amy's award-winning collection, The DNA Age by clicking here.
