High Risk Breakthrough!

On Sunday May 26th, researchers at leading international institutions revealed new evidence regarding genetic mutations and their correlation to breast cancer. It was disclosed that a genetic mutation found in 60 percent of women in the United States raises the risk of breast cancer. The gene FGFR2 is a known receptor for tyrosine kinase, which is present in several other types of cancer. There are four variations of the prevalent mutation found on the gene FGFR2. A woman's lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is around 1 in 8 or 12.5%. However, the risk of breast cancer was raised by 20 percent for women who carried one copy of the mutated gene and 60 percent for women who carried two copies. Moreover, 60 percent of the women studied carried at least one copy of the mutated gene. These consequential studies, although preliminary, are evidence that many unsuspecting women are at risk of developing breast cancer. Additionally, unlike the gene mutations occurring on BRCA1 and BRCA2, these findings are applicable to women without a family history of breast cancer. While breast cancer in young women is rare, it is not impossible. What is most important, is that at the age of 20 years old, all women begin to take control of their breast health by doing their monthly self exams and visiting their health professionals each year.
