BRIGHT NOW ARCHIVE
August 30, 2007
Every week, I am so blessed to have the opportunity to connect with so many brave and inspirational young women who are facing breast and ovarian cancer issues in a personal and unique way. This past weekend, I had the honor of traveling to Washington D.C. to attend the 10th Annual Susan G. Komen for the Cure Mission Conference, which brings together some of the top 1,200 physicians, policy makers, researchers, survivors and activists to discuss the latest research and advances in the breast cancer field. I also had the opportunity to meet the 11 incredible young women who I will be working closely with over the next 6 years as Co-Chair of the Young Women's National Advisory Council. I was most touched by the four breast cancer survivors on our council. Bridget was diagnosed at the age of 21 (as was Elissa) when her boyfriend discovered a lump. She brought the lump up to several doctors who assured her she had nothing to worry about. However, when she finally found a doctor who would perform a mammogram, she learned that she had stage 4 breast cancer, due to the delay. Nikia was diagnosed at the age of 16 and is a 13 year survivor and Dikla, who lost her mother to breast cancer at the age of 14 and father to colon cancer, just learned a week ago that the breast cancer returned, this time on her lungs. I was so struck by the courage all these young women embodied-to not let cancer get the best of them, to speak out and ensure other young women are doing self exams as often as they are brushing their teeth, to continue to date and sing and study and dance, and most importantly, to keep an optimistic and bright attitude through it all. I feel so blessed to have 10 more friends, and Bright Pink partners in my life and look forward to partnering with the Komen Foundation to ensure young women everywhere are proactive with their health. All the best!
