WE ARE BRIGHT PINK
Meche Sisters
Over the last 15 years or so, our mom has won the cancer battle four times 1) ovarian 2) breast 3) colorectal 4) 2nd (new) breast. Her mother and grandmother both died of ovarian cancer. Her mother's 7 siblings all died of related cancers. You can see where I'm going with this . . . yes, our mom is BRCA1 positive, as are my 2 sisters and I. Two of us (sisters) had complete hysterectomies on my mom's doctor's recommendations (prior to genetic testing). It was after my mom's colorectal diagnosis in 2005 and before my 3 rd sister's planned hysterectomy that we decided to have the genetic testing done. My sister went ahead with her prophylactic oopherectomy and they discovered she already had cancer developing in her fallopian tube. Following her chemotherapy treatments, our mom was diagnosed with her 2 nd breast cancer (a year ago). This year, we are all (3 sisters) having our mastectomy surgeries on December 3 almost a year to the day since my mom's bilateral mastectomies. We are doing the surgeries together, on the same day for two reasons: for the "we-are-in-this-together" factor and to raise awareness about genetic testing and genetic counseling.
