WE ARE BRIGHT PINK
Megan
When I was a sophomore in high school and my sister was in 8th grade, our mom was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She went through all of the treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. We had so much support from our friends and family that we decided we wanted to do something to make more support available to others and to increase awareness about breast cancer.
The next fall, we started the Pink Ribbon Club at our high school to fund-raise for, volutneer for, and spread awareness about the fight against breast cancer. The club has been hugely successful and spread to over 20 other high schools in the past five years. We think that it is important that women as young as teenagers take charge of their own health and are aware of their health risks.
My family and I are lucky because my mom is a 5-year survivor and going strong. My experience with breast cancer has turned into a positive one because it has given me the opportunity to reach out to others and help them to feel like they can make an impact. All it takes is a couple hours, a couple dollars, or a couple of words and each person can make a big difference.
