WE ARE BRIGHT PINK

Sarah
I'm here because my mom, Jan, is the most amazing woman in the world! She's a breast cancer survivor and I watched her go through chemo, all of its side effects and what seemed like hundreds of surgeries! She's a champion though, she had such a wonderful attitude through it all and now she's healthy and happy and so am I. She's raised money through organizing breast cancer walks and she's also given her time to help others in the community who were also dealing with cancer. My mom has educated my about my risk of cancer, ever since I was young, right about the time that my aunt died of breast cancer. When I became old enough to really understand the decision in front of me, she asked if I would like to get tested for the BCRA2 mutation (which runs in the family) and get genetic counseling. I was all for it. It turns out, I do have the BRCA1 mutation, which means I have a high risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. I'm not worried at all, thanks to the attitude that my mom has demonstrated to me. I get screened by doctors frequently and feel confident that if I am ever diagnosed with cancer, I'll kick it's butt. I love you, mom!
