WE ARE BRIGHT PINK
Teresa
My story started in May 2007. Although cancer has weaved through our family for generations, my knowledge of BRCA is surprisingly recent. I've had the unfortunate life to watch many aunts, uncles, grandparents and even cousins lose the battle to cancer. I've had the fortunate life to not be exposed to it in my immediate family. My parents, now into their 70's, remain cancer free and relatively healthy. Last year, my cousin underwent genetic testing, following her bout with breast cancer opening the door for the rest of us to better understand our family's history. It's been a blessing.
At the age of 37, I tested positive for BRCA1. I received the gene from my father. I think I knew the result when they did my blood work, as I already felt a sense of power in knowing. With a husband and 2 amazing children, I've made the decision to have a hysterectomy this October. This will reduce my chance of breast cancer significantly, since I'll be below 40 years of age. For now, I've decided to follow the recommended increased screenings for my breasts, with annual mammograms & MRI's and semi-annual physical exams. As my children grow older and more independent, my choices may change.
I find this site and it's forums to be extremely helpful. I appreciate, Lindsay, your youthful initiative to create such an amazing oasis for women who share the same inheritance. While I have many people around me who love and support me, most do not understand the impact that this has on my life and my thoughts. The women involved with brightpink, however, understand them completely! I'm very thankful for the support this site will provide as I continue this new journey.
